Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden in Las Palmas (What to See?)

Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden is a magnificent botanical garden located at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Covering an area of 27 hectares, Viera y Clavijo can be considered as the largest botanical garden in Spain.

What to Expect?

Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden shows off the great wealth of wildlife in the Macaronesia region, highlighted by the 500 or so endemic species from the Canary Islands. This botanical garden was founded in 1952 and is named after two prominent Canarian scholars, José de Viera y Clavijo and Matías de Córdoba y Ramos.


It covers an area of 27 hectares and is home to more than 500 plant species, including rare and exotic plants from all around the world.

Here, you can explore the different sections of the garden, each of which represents different biogeographic regions such as Macaronesia, America, Africa, and the Mediterranean.

There are also thematic gardens such as the Garden of the Islands, the Palm Garden, and the Cactus and Succulent Garden.

One of the highlights of the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden is the greenhouses, which house plants from tropical rainforests, desert regions, and other climatic zones. Another must-see is the Garden of the Islands, which showcases the flora of the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores.

Visitor Information

The garden is open to visitors every day from 9 am to 6 pm, and guided tours are available in different languages. There is also a gift shop on-site where visitors can purchase souvenirs and plants from the garden.

Located in the capital city of Las Palmas, the Garden is easily accessible by public transport, with several bus lines stopping nearby. Additionally, the garden has a parking area for those who prefer to drive.
