In 1992, the architect Rafael Moneo managed to preserve the neoclassical façade of the former Villahermosa Palace and yet transform the building of the museum into a modern art gallery that holds one of the finest private collections of the world with over 800 paintings, sculptures, tapestries and objets d’art, dating from the 13th through to the closing years of the 20th century.
